The figure above shows nothing more than a set of blinking magenta dots, but if you stare at the cross for a few seconds, a green dot will appear to fill in the gap. By staring at the cross even longer, the magenta dots will completely disappear, leaving only the green dot. The new dot is green because green is the opposite (or complementary) color of magenta.
