Enola Gay is the name given to the airplane the United States used to drop an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Three days later the U.S. dropped another atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The Japanese, who had been at war with China since 1937, and the United States since 1941, surrendered within hours of the bombing of Nagasaki. Over 200,000 Japanese people, mostly civilians, were killed by the immediate impact of the two bombs. The men and women who lived through this time vowed that nuclear war must never again be an option between nations, and the United Nations was founded with that goal. Image Credit
